The United States and the Czech Republic are linked not only bilaterally but though shared membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The United States made its commitment in 1949. The Czech Republic did so in 1999, as soon as it was possible after the Velvet Revolution had brought an end to the communist period in 1989. What many Americans and Europeans do not fully recognize is that the North Atlantic Treaty is a political as well as a military commitment. We currently face challenges in both areas, and choices made over the next few years on both sides of the Atlantic will have a profound impact on our individual and collective interests.
Stanley R. Sloan has worked on transatlantic security issues for over 50 years, as a US government official and now as an educator, writer and lecturer. He worked with the US Senate in the 1990s on the process that led to the Czech Republic joining NATO. He now is raising alarms about the future of NATO and, more broadly, liberal democracy, which will be the focus of his talks in the Czech Republic. He is author of Transatlantic Traumas: Has Illiberalism Brought the West to the Brink ofCollapse? (Manchester University Press, Pocket Politics Series, March 2018) and Defense of the West: NATO, the European Union and the Transatlantic Bargain (Manchester University Press – 2016).

Přednáška profesora Stanleyho Sloana v MZK při příležitosti 100. výročí česko-amerických vztahů se zaměří nejen na bilaterální vztahy, ale také na společné členství v Severoatlantické alianci.
Mnozí si neuvědomují, že členství v NATO je nejen vojenským, ale zároveň politickým závazkem. V současné době čelíme výzvám v obou oblastech a směřování aliance v následujích letech bude mít hluboký dopad na individuální i kolektivní zájmy na obou stranách Atlantiku.
Stanley R. Sloan se zabývá severoatlantickými vztahy přes 50 let - nejdříve jako zaměstnanec americké vlády a nyní jako pedagog, spisovatel a lektor. V 90. letech se podílel na procesu vstupu České republiky do NATO. V současné době upozorňuje na nejasnou budoucnost aliance a liberální demokracie jako takové. Na toto téma se zaměří i při své návštěvě České republiky. Je autorem knih Transatlantic Traumas: Has Illiberalism Brought the West to the Brink of Collapse? a Defence of the West.
