1st floor

You can find Eduard Lendl's chess corner on the 1st floor in the Rental Room (above the Registration and Rental counter), at the end of the gallery.

Eduard Lendl (1893 – 1976) came from a family of high-ranking officials. He studied Czech and French at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and later worked as a teacher in several Czech cities. He ended his teaching career as a provincial school inspector and head of the school board. In April 1948, he was transferred to the State Pedagogical Library, where he began systematically building a collection of chess literature, which is the basis of the current chess collection of the Moravian Provincial Library. It consists of almost 5,500 volumes and is still considered one of the largest in the world. In cooperation with the Czech Chess Association, the collection is currently being supplemented with domestic and foreign titles. Lendl also devoted himself to teaching chess, organizing thematic discussions in the library, and publishing lists of chess literature.

It is therefore logical that the newly opened chess corner was named after Eduard Lendl. It offers those interested a selection of literature from the aforementioned collection, for study in the library and for home borrowing. At the same time, there are also three places where you can play chess. Chess boards and clocks can be borrowed from the library against a library card. The corner was officially opened on April 26, 2022, in the presence of representatives of the Chess Association and the MZK. Guests also had the opportunity to participate in a simultaneous game with David Navara, a Czech chess player who is one of the world's top players. A short video greeting from tennis player Ivan Lendl, who is Eduard Lendl's grandson, was also a highlight.
