Při příležitosti 100. výročí vzniku Československa a navázání česko-amerických diplomatických vztahů vás Moravská zemská knihovna zve na přednášku amerického historika Kevina McNamary o tom, jak československé legie přispěly k rozpadu impéria, pomohly založit československý stát, a přeměnily tak mapu Evropy.

Kevin McNamara spolupracuje s Výzkumným institutem pro zahraniční politiku (Foreign Policy Research Institute) ve Filadelfii a je bývalým přispěvatelem časopisu Orbis zabývajícího se světovou problematikou. Jeho kniha Dreams of a Great Small Nation měla velmi pozitivní ohlas v The Wall Street Journal, Publisher’s Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, History of War (UK), and The Literary Review (UK). McNamara se poprvé dozvěděl o neuvěřitelném odvaze československých legionářů během putování přes východní Sibiř po rozpadu Sovětského svazu.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the former republic of Czecho-Slovakia and of the U.S. diplomatic relations with the Czechs, U.S.  historian Kevin McNamara will talk about the highly dramatic events that led to the new republic's founding in 1918 – which involved a Czecho-Slovak Legion that seized Siberia, global espionage, high-stakes diplomacy, and fund-raising support and political pressure on President Woodrow Wilson from America’s own Czechs and Slovaks.

McNamara is an Associate Scholar of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Philadelphia, PA, and a former contributing editor of Orbis, its quarterly journal of world affairs.  His book earned superlative praise in The Wall Street Journal, Publisher’s Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, History of War (United Kingdom), and The Literary Review (United Kingdom).  McNamara first learned about the incredible exploits of the Czecho-Slovak Legion during a trek across eastern Siberia after the collapse of the Soviet Union.  Traveling almost 2,000 miles on the Trans-Siberian Railway between Irkutsk and Khabarovsk, he happened upon the story of this ad hoc army of POWs, which riveted the world’s attention in 1918 by seizing all five million square miles of Siberia, threatening the fate of Russia’s new Soviet regime.
